Credentials & Professional Background
Dr. Balshaw was in private practice in Washington, DC, for 29 years before relocating to Santa Barbara in 2016 with his family.
Dr. Balshaw transitioned to this practice in October 2017 by first forming a partnership with the founder, Dr. Magnuson, and then acquiring the practice upon Dr. Magnuson’s retirement.
- Dr. Balshaw graduated in 1986 from Northwestern University Dental School (ranked in the top 5 dental programs in the country)
- He completed his general practice residency at Mount Sinai Hospital New York City in 1987, where he obtained specialized training in anesthesia, the diagnosis and treatment of Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) issues, and treating patients with complicated medical histories
- He holds a Fellow and Master’s designation at the International Dental Implant Association (IDIA), and regularly teaches advanced digital dentistry techniques to dental professionals from the US and around the world.

In California, all dentists are required to complete 50 hours of Continuing Education every two years – Dr. Balshaw routinely completes more than 150 hours annually through:
- Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic (CEREC) Doctors’ Mentor (highest-rated training center for computerized chairside dentistry in the country)
- SPEAR faculty club, a membership organization featuring the top clinicians and dental educators worldwide
- Central Coast CEREC study club member, lecturer, and presenter

Family and Community Matter

Dr. Balshaw and his wife, Gill, have three children: Stephanie, Caroline, and Thomas. He enjoys quality time with his family and the Santa Barbara community of friends and neighbors they have grown to love. He and Gill are strong supporters of our local schools including Washington Elementary and La Colina Junior High where Thomas is currently an 8th grader. Over the years Dr. Balshaw and Gill have sponsored, chaperoned and helped out at many school events with Gill serving as La Colina’s Parent-Teacher-Student Association president in 2023-24.
Internationally, Dr. Balshaw joins dental training and relief programs bringing oral surgery care to underserved communities in Latin America.
For fun and interest
Dr. Balshaw is an avid soccer fan and cyclist. On weekends, when his son Thomas (or their favorite team, Liverpool) isn’t playing a match, he can be found out on the area bike paths. Dr. Balshaw also loves to travel, cook, and is a certified Sommelier.
We know that just about everyone likes to indulge in sweets from time to time. We’re happy to report that with proper dental care and a good dentist, sweets can be enjoyed in moderation without consequence to your dental health.
In fact, to demonstrate our acceptance of your occasional sweet tooth, you may want to enter Dr. B’s unofficial ice cream contest. If you can prove to him that there is a better flavor than vanilla, he’ll treat you to an ice cream treat of your choice. Now, for one small hint for whatever expectations you may have about an easy win. We’re not talking about your basic run-of-the-mill vanilla. We’re talking really good vanilla. The very best kind.
Childhood History
Dr. Balshaw’s grandparents emigrated from the north of England to Peru in the early 1940s. Dr. Balshaw was born and raised in Lima, Peru, and came to the United States for college. He is fully bilingual in English and Spanish.
